The Waverley at Ayr

School News...

Primary 5 went to sea on "The Waverley", the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world.

There's a website at www.waverleyexcursions.co.uk and others with pictures of the ship (search at Google).

Leaving Harbour

This trip was an "educational cruise" to Holy Isle and Pladda, two smaller islands off Arran. There were classes from Ayr Grammar Primary and Alloway Primary as well.

Arran

After walking down from school to the harbour, P5 settled in for a relaxed trip over to Arran and then down past Holy Isle and Pladda. There aren't any harbours big enough for "The Waverley" on Holy Isle or Pladda, so they weren't able to go ashore.

Holy Isle

There was a quiet 4-hour cruise with time to watch the scenery go by, chat to friends, and visit the cafeteria, the engine-room and the souvenir shop.

The Engines

The ship's engine room is open to visitors, with lots of impressive machinery. Not easy to photo, but easy to remember once you've seen it.

Happy Birthday

One of P5 had her birthday on the day of the trip. The ship's Captain got everyone to sing "Happy Birthday" to her and played music over the "Waverley's" tannoy.

You can read more about Arran at a number of web sites including www.arran.uk.com which has a map showing Holy Isle and Pladda.
